Silver Unusual Portrayal of Saint Anthony
Portuguese hallmark post 1984, fineness 835. Maker's markings.
Saint Anthony holds a palm instead of a lily on his left hand.
However in early 14th Century the palm, the ancient symbol of victory over evil, incorruptibility, immortality and of good deeds counts among the Saint's attributes.
A similar portrayal can be found in an 18th Century piece from the Ernesto Vilhena collection in the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon (inventory No.224).
